Frequently Asked Questions

Questions and Anwers In Regards To Antique and Reclaimed Cobblestones

Q. Where do vintage cobblestones come from?
A. Most vintage cobblestones come from old streets in turn of the century mill cities, especially former seaports.

Q. How old are your vintage cobblestones?
A. Our reclaimed stones average between 150 and 200 years of age.

Q. What are your cobblestones made of?
A. Our cobblestones are made of granite. Granite is one of the heartier stones available, and will last a lifetime.

Q. What is desirable about old cobblestones?
A. There are several reasons why old cobblestones are unique and cannot be replicated. The top surface of the stone is worn smooth through years of activity. Vintage stones have color variations dependent on where the stones were quarried and in what manner they were worn. Also, vintage cobblestones were individually hand cut, and therefore are available in various sizes.

Q. Where were vintage cobblestones quarried?
A. Vintage cobblestones were quarried in the eastern United States as well as in Europe. In some cases, these stones were first used as ballast on sailing vessels coming from Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. Those cobblestones are commonly known as Belgium Block.

Q. What are the most common weights and sizes of your cobblestones?
A. Our most common reclaimed cobblestone sizes are Medium and Jumbo. A Medium cobblestone ranges from 5 to 9 inches long, 4 to 6 inches deep, 4 to 5 inches wide, and weighs between 12 to 15 pounds. A Jumbo cobblestone ranges from 9 to 14 inches long, 7 to 8 inches deep, 4 to 5 inches wide, and weighs between 20 to 30 pounds.

Q. How many cobblestones are needed?
A. Because the type and size of antique cobblestones used dictate the number of stones needed, there is no fail-safe method to determine how many will be required to cover a given area. For estimation purposes, 3½ to 4 Medium cobblestones will usually cover a square foot. Depending on which surface you choose to use (the worn surface or the rough surface), approximately 1 to 2½ Jumbo cobblestones will cover a square foot.

Q. Are the old cobblestones cleaned?
A. The vintage cobblestones are put through giant screeners. After they have been handpicked and sorted by size, they are individually cleaned of concrete and asphalt if necessary.

Q. How are cobblestones priced and sold?
A. Our reclaimed cobblestones are sold unclean or clean, sorted or in bulk, and on pallets if desired. Price is determined by size, whether the cobblestones have been sorted and cleaned, and whether the cobblestones are put on pallets.

Q. Are all vintage cobblestones the same?
A. No! Old cobblestones come in various sizes, shapes, and colors. Due to the fact that vintage cobblestones come from various places and were hand cut, each stone is unique.

Q. What quantities of cobblestones do you sell?
A. We have a minimum quantity of 100 cobblestones. Any quantity over 1,000 antique cobblestones are sold at a reduced price.

Q. What are cobblestones used for?
A. Cobblestones, old and reclaimed, can be used in many ways because of the staying power of granite. Uses include (but are not limited to) driveways, parking areas, walkways, fireplaces, walls, patios, and even home construction. Our gallery shows a variety of in progress and finished projects.

Q. Can you buy new cobblestones?
A. Yes, one can buy reclaimed cobblestones in several sizes. New cobblestones most often come from India or China.

Q. How rare are vintage cobblestones?
A. Old cobblestones are fast becoming a lost part of our past. Most of the streets in New England that were once paved in cobblestones have been taken up or paved over with asphalt or concrete.

Q. Can I mix cobblestones with other materials?
A. It is common to mix cobblestones (old or reclaimed) with other types of materials such as brick, concrete, gravel, and stone dust.

Q. How are the stones shipped?
A. All of our reclaimed cobblestones are shipped in pallet quantities on flatbed trucks that can carry up to 16 pallets at a time. Pallet quantities may vary based on the individual stone type and the dimensions of the stone.

Q. What is your delivery area?
